Hello Parents!
Our first week was off to a great start! SCIENCE - We are diving right into the Scientific Method and are beginning our unit on Matter today. We will be using BrainPop and BrainPop Jr as well as Discovery Ed as resources during this unit. If your children would like to re-watch these at home they can use the following: BrainPop and BrainPopJr - username - palmbeach, password - palmbeach www.brainpopjr.com www.brainpop.com Discovery Ed - username is student ID_cms, password is student ID www.discoveryeducaiton.com We will be doing several experiments at the end of the week and I'll be looking for three parent volunteers in each section. Hoyle's HR - 9:30-10:15, Williams HR 10:15-11:00. We will also need some donations if anyone is willing: Sprite or 7 Up - 1 2-liter bottle Box of Baking Soda 12 Alka Seltzer tablets per class large container of vinegar box of raisins 1 large tub of vanilla ice cream per HR 2 2-liters of Rootbeer per HR If you're able to donate and item, please reply to this email with the item you can send in. MATH: We have done a pretest on our numeration unit. We'll be using this information to individualize your child's instruction during workshop time. This unit will focus on number sense up to 1000. They will build the numbers, understand the place value of digits in each number, be able to express numbers in written, standard and expanded form. We will review addition and subtraction without regrouping and move toward addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will be exposing the students to several strategies for adding and subtracting as a way of developing an understanding of the process. However, it will be our goal that most students become comfortable with and use the traditional algorithms. We will begin daily math facts practice today. Not only will we be participating in 10 of activities in class each day that focus on math facts, we will give a daily facts quiz. Everyone will start at the simplest level and progress at their own pace. If they know their facts, they'll easily complete addition up through 12s by the middle of October and move to multiplication. I am a firm believer that memorizing math facts just makes life and math easier as the difficulty continues to increase over the years. If we put the work in now, they'll never forget them and be grateful in the long run. You child should be able to tell you daily whether they're on the 6s or 3s (for example). It is our expectation in 3rd grade that you spend a minimum of 5 minutes/night practicing facts however you see fit. Some ideas are- flashcards, apps (math splat, math duel), songs - repetition is the easiest may to build automaticity. If students are fluent with their addition facts, they should be able to recognize the related subtraction facts. The same is true about multiplication - if they know the multiplication, they'll know/learn the division easily. Please let me know if you ever have any questions or concerns! I am looking forward to a GREAT year! |
